The Ndlovu Care Group has a 24 hour clinic for Ante-Natal Care Post-natal care, PMTCT, a delivery room and eighteen beds (serving a community estimated at 160 000, that has no other primary health care facility). The maternity unit is contained by the Ndlovu Care Group and does not have dedicated funding or funders. The NCG is compelled to maintain the clinic as a necessary service towards their holistic approach regarding community wellbeing.
The clinic now also has the facility for PAP smears and colpacity treatment.
Ante natal care includes HIV monitoring and care for patients who are enrolled in the Champ Program.
Without medical intervention, 33% of all infants born of HIV positive mothers are infected with the virus during the birth process. Neviparine, which is still is given to HIV positive mothers during birth at other clinics the world over, nevertheless results in an infection rate of infants of over 6%.
PMTCT is the abbreviation for Prevention of Mother to Child Infection of the HIV virus. The PMTCT Program that Ndlovu’s 24 Hour Maternity Clinic follows, has a success rate of less than 1% of infant deaths due to HIV infection during birth. In fact since the program's initiation in 2003, there has been only one infant death due to mother to child transmission during birth.
